An Overview
 
BizTalk is an initiative which establishes a set of guidelines for how to publish schemas in XML, and how to use XML messages to easily integrate software programs together in order to build rich new solutions.

BizTalk is an industry initiative started by Microsoft, and supported by a wide range of organizations like SAP, CommerceOne and Ariba.
   
Application Integration
 
 Traditionally, BizTalk Server has been used for application integration, where the following two scenarios are most important:
  Connecting applications within a single organization, commonly referred as Enterprise Application Integration (EAI).
  Connecting applications in different organizations, often called as Business-to-Business (B2B) Integration.
